Nashville Yards Are Full of Stumps That Never Got Finished

It is one of the most common things we see across Nashville properties. A tree came down years ago, either from a storm or a previous removal, and the stump was left behind. Maybe the original company did not offer grinding. Maybe the homeowner planned to deal with it later. Either way, the stump is still there, slowly decaying, sprouting new growth, and taking up usable space.

In neighborhoods like Bellevue, Green Hills, and East Nashville, lot sizes are tight enough that a single stump can block a patio expansion, interfere with a fence line, or sit in the middle of what should be open yard. On larger properties south of the city, old stumps collect moisture and become hubs for termites, carpenter ants, and fungal growth that can eventually spread to nearby healthy trees.

Grinding a stump is a straightforward job when you have the right equipment. Our crew brings commercial-grade grinders that handle stumps of any size, from small ornamentals to large hardwood bases three feet across. We grind below grade, clean up the chips, and leave the area ready for fill, sod, or replanting.

Why That Stump in Your Nashville Yard Should Not Stay

Stumps seem harmless. They sit there, they do not move, and most homeowners learn to mow around them. But leaving a stump in the ground creates problems that compound over time:

  • Termites and carpenter ants. Decaying wood below and at ground level is a magnet for wood-boring insects. A stump 10 feet from your home is a colony waiting to happen.
  • New shoots and sucker growth. Many hardwood species send up aggressive new shoots from the stump and root system. Mowing them down only encourages more. The root system keeps feeding them until the stump is fully removed.
  • Fungal spread. Mushrooms growing on an old stump are a visible sign of decay, but the fungal network underground can spread to the roots of nearby healthy trees.
  • Trip hazards and mowing obstacles. A stump in the yard is something you dodge every time you mow, and something a guest, child, or pet can trip over. Stumps hidden by tall grass are worse.
  • Lost usable space. A stump and its surrounding root flare take up more space than you think. Removing it opens up room for a garden bed, patio, fire pit, or just clean lawn.
  • Blocked construction or landscaping projects. If you are planning a fence, shed, deck, or driveway expansion, a stump in the path has to go before the project can start.

What Happens When You Call TN Tree Preservation

1. You Call or Text

Reach us at (615) 586-4742. Let us know how many stumps you have, roughly how large they are, and where they are on the property. We will schedule an estimate.

2. We Assess the Stump

Our crew looks at the stump size, species, root spread, and proximity to structures, driveways, or underground utilities. You get a clear explanation of the approach and a written estimate.

3. We Grind It Down

Our commercial-grade grinder chips the stump to 6 to 8 inches below grade. For full removal jobs, we excavate the root ball entirely. The process is efficient, and most single-stump jobs are completed the same day.

4. We Clean Up

The grinding produces wood chips that we use to backfill the hole. Excess chips are removed or spread on-site if you want them for mulch. The area is leveled and left clean.

Nashville Homeowners Finish the Job with Our Crew

Stump grinding is often the final step of a tree removal, and it is the step that gets skipped the most. Homeowners call us months or even years after a tree was taken down by another company to finally deal with the stump that was left behind.

TN Tree Preservation has been grinding stumps across Nashville since 2014. Our crew has handled everything from single backyard stumps in Hillsboro Village to multi-stump clearing jobs on rural properties near College Grove. We bring commercial equipment that handles hardwood and softwood alike, and we finish every job the same way: clean, level, and ready for the next step.

We are fully insured and bonded. Every job comes with a written estimate. Our 100+ Google reviews reflect a consistent pattern: the crew showed up when they said they would, did the work efficiently, and left the property in good shape.

What Does Stump Grinding Cost in Nashville?

Stump grinding is one of the more affordable tree services, but the cost varies depending on the stump’s size, species (hardwoods take longer than softwoods), accessibility, and root spread. A small stump in an open yard is a quick job. A large oak stump wedged between a house and a fence takes more time and care.

Here is what to keep in mind:

  • Get a written estimate before the work starts. We provide free estimates so you know the exact cost upfront. No surprises.
  • Diameter is the main cost driver. Stumps are typically priced by the diameter of the base. A 12-inch stump costs less than a 36-inch stump because the grinder runs longer on larger wood.
  • Multiple stumps get better pricing. If you have several stumps on the same property, the per-stump cost drops because the equipment is already on-site.
  • Full removal costs more than grinding. If the root ball needs to come out entirely (for construction or foundation work), expect a higher cost because excavation equipment is involved.

Nashville FAQs

Stump Grinding and Removal

How deep do you grind the stump?

We grind 6 to 8 inches below the surrounding ground level. This is deep enough to cover with topsoil and grow grass over, or to build a patio, lay sod, or plant a new tree in the same spot.

No. Once the stump is ground below grade, the root system loses its energy source and dies off naturally over time. Surface roots may remain visible for a while but will decay on their own.

Most single stumps are ground in 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and species. Multi-stump jobs can be completed in a single visit, usually within a few hours.

Yes. Our equipment can operate in tight spaces. We take precautions to protect nearby structures, and we adjust our approach based on how close the stump is to foundations, walls, or utility lines.

We use the chips to backfill the hole left by the grinding. If there are excess chips, we can spread them as mulch in your landscape beds or haul them away, whichever you prefer.

Grinding is sufficient for the vast majority of situations. Full removal, where the entire root ball is excavated, is only necessary when a new structure, foundation, or driveway will be placed directly over the stump location.

Absolutely. A large portion of our stump work is finishing jobs that other companies left incomplete. It does not matter when the tree was removed or who removed it.
